ABOUT ME
Welcome to EPIC Photographic.
Or, as many people like to call it — EPIC PHOTO+GRAPHIC.
This is the home of award-winning, casual-yet-artistic sports and portrait photographer, Jeff Picoult. If you like things to be less than predictable then you will love EPIC Photographic.
A bit about me!
Shades of gray...
I’ve spent the better part of 40 years with a camera in my hand. Sometime around the young age of 8 or 10 my grandfather taught me the basics of how to operate a camera. Ever since then I’ve looked at things a bit different than everyone else. Over the past decade I’ve taken that different approach a step farther as I’ve fallen in love with the classic look of black and white photographs. So much so that I’ve learned to see my surroundings in nothing but shades of gray. It’s these shades of gray, I believe, that creates emotion in what would otherwise be just another mundane photograph.
Storytellers...
I like photos that tell a story. Oftentimes a single photo can illustrate exactly what happened in a given moment. While other times it may take a few photos to convey the same story. Either way, I’m drawn to the story and those photographs that explain what happened when I wasn’t there are my favorites. And that’s my goal as a photographer - to make you feel as if you were there.
PHOTO+GRAPHIC...
What exactly do I mean by PHOTO+GRAPHIC? Well, it’s a new approach I’m taking with my sports photography. I’ve recently fallen in love with the idea of composite images. Using the technology available to me I am taking the subject of my photos out of the original background and putting them into entirely new surroundings. These new surroundings are mostly computer generated works of art meant to add emotion and feeling to the subject that is, sometimes, otherworldly. Drawing on a word that’s been heavily used over the past several years I like to think of these new PHOTO+GRAPHIC images as EPIC. Smoke, fire, cracked earth, intense lights, rain, storm clouds, and lightning all lend themselves to the computer generated graphics filling the backgrounds of these EPIC scenes.
These are a few of my least favorite things...
While I might be appreciated as a portrait photographer I can say with certainty that portraits are my least favorite thing. I am not a fan of posed photos. However, I’m making the best of it and having fun along the way. A combination of youthful exuberance and capturing the candids makes portraits a bit easier for me to do.
and, Action
If you have kids in high school sports you’ll likely see me along the sidelines during some of their events with a camera or two in my hands. Action sports are one of things I like most about photography. Watching a sporting event through the lens puts me in a place like nowhere else on Earth. Being witness to the raw emotion of someone’s son or daughter as they cross the finish line, catch a pass, hit the ball, or clear a hurdle is something I don’t think I’ll ever give up.
My happy place
If I had to choose one place to spend time with my camera it would likely be a race track. But you wouldn’t find me at an oval track watching NASCAR. You’d find me at one of the many natural road courses throughout the United States watching, and more importantly, listening to, sports cars and prototypes as they make their way through the park-like settings of some of the most amazing sporting facilities on Earth. The undulating terrain, the twists and turns, the trees, the fans, the smell. All of that topped of by the sound of a combination naturally aspirated, turbo-charged, and hybrid powered engines is like nothing else. Throaty V8’s. Whiny turbos. Each manufacturer with their own unique sound that imprints your soul the moment it penetrates your ears. Now, add the flashy colors and unique shapes of each and every one of the cars, the backdrop of trees and grandstands, and a throng of fans and you have my favorite recipe for a happy place.
Name drops...
Over the past decade I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with, for, and alongside some amazing people in the racing community. Many of those opportunities were afforded to me by my strong work ethic and my desire to get as close to the action as possible. From my time as the team photographer for HART (Honda of America Racing Team) at the Rolex 24 at Daytona to a summer of races as team photographer for Turner Motorsport (Mid-Ohio, Detroit, Indianapolis, Watkins Glen), team photographer for Riley Racing at Mid-Ohio to team photographer for Michael Shank Racing (Detroit, Mid-Ohio, Indianapolis, Watkins Glen), as well as photographing drivers and personalities such as Patrick Dempsey, Juan Pablo Montoya, Helio Castroneves, Fernando Alonso, Scott Pruett, Justin Wilson, AJ Allmendinger, Marcos Ambros, Sam Hornish Jr, Ryan Eversley, Jeff Segal, and Katherine Legge. Honda HP/D, Acura Motorsports, BMW Motorsports, Ford Racing, and SpeedSource Mazda have all helped me out along the way.
There you have it. A bit about me. Take a look around. Let me know what you think. And, when you’re ready to have your own team or group photographed hit me up and I’ll do my best to make it fun!
